Pleats, please. This scarf from renowned designer Issey Miyake (Japanese, born 1938) celebrates The Costume Institute exhibition Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology at The Met. One of the exhibition's featured themes, pleating has a long history in apparel, dating as far back as Egypt's Early Dynastic Period (3100-2649 B.C.).
Issey Miyake is renowned for his inventive approach to pleating, in which he pleats entire garments rather than just textiles. The process entails constructing garments at two or three times their intended size and then folding, ironing and lacing them into a heat press. Amazing pleated creations by Miyake are on view in The Met exhibition.
