Arts and Crafts Small Vase
Description
This matte green bud vase was crafted by a contemporary potter dedicated to Arts and Crafts principles from an earlier time. It displays the pared-down design and natural motifs characteristic of the movement, which lasted from the mid-nineteenth century into the 1920s. This movement spurred the production of handcrafted pottery, furniture, lamps, book bindings, and jewelry. Each vase is handmade, fired twice, and inscribed with the artist's mark.
Ceramic. 3 1/2''H, 4'' diam.
- Ceramic
- 3 1/2''H4'' diam.
Art History
The Arts and Crafts movement arose in England in the mid-nineteenth century before spreading through Europe and America. Advocates sought to improve standards of decorative design, which were believed to have been debased by industrialization, and to create beautiful environments that showcased fine workmanship. Arts and Crafts proponents called for an end to the division of labor and advanced the designer as craftsman.
