Description

By William D. Wixom

This former Met Bulletin completes a survey of selected sculptures in the galleries of medieval art in the main building of the Metropolitan Museum. The sculptures examined in this publication begin with works dated about 1400 and ends with examples from about 1530. All of the sculptures represent variations of the style found in northern Europe and Spain that scholars have usually designated as Late Gothic, which is independent of contemporary styles of the Italian Renaissance. Many of the works examined here are of historical importance with respect to context, function, liturgy, devotion, and the elusive concept of reception during the Middle Ages.

48 pages, 59 illustrations (47 in full color). 8 1/2'' x 11''. Paper.
