The design on our pendant is based on elements from a fragment of a sarcophagus (southwestern France, ca. 700s) and a tomb plaque (Byzantine or Visigothic; probably made in Spain, 400– 800), that display Christograms, and are now in the collection of The Cloisters. Christ’s monogram, or Christogram, formed from the first two letters of his name in Greek (chi
), which early Christians used as a symbol of their faith.
