Description

In Bonnefont Garden at The Cloisters, horned poppy (Glaucium flavum) is grown in a bed devoted to medicinal plants. According to the fifteenth-century herbal Hortus Sanitatis, glaucium was considered cooling and was used to stop bleeding. Our irresistible necklace is based on poppy blossoms seen at The Cloisters museum and gardens.

Art History

The Elizabethan herbalist John Gerards description of the plant that he names in Latin as Papaver cornutum flore luteo, the horned poppy with the yellow flower, was based on personal observation. He notes that it groweth upon the sands and banks of the sea, and lists places along the English coast where he found it. Naturalized in the United States, yellow horned poppy grows on the east and west coasts as well as in Colorado and Oklahoma.
