An uplifting design. Our bold pendant recalls an ancient earthenware roof-tile end in The Met collection, originally made during China's Western Han dynasty (206 B.C.–A.D. 9). Connecting to a half-cylindrical tile, such round pieces were used to cover the eaves of building roofs in traditional Chinese architecture.
Both protective and ornamental, decorative tile-ends lasted for two thousand years of Chinese history. Western Han tile-ends, like this one, are typically divided into sections, with the sinuous characters molded in relief and curved to fit inside the circular areas. The auspicious four-character inscription reads: "eternal happiness without end."
