Recalling precious jewelry of the Hellenistic period (ca. 323–31 B.C.), this fashion-forward necklace in hand-hammered gold overlay and leather was produced in Thessaloniki, Greece, by designer Fotini Liami.
After Alexander the Great conquered the Persian empire and seized its fantastically rich treasures in Babylon, vast quantities of gold passed into circulation. The market for fashionable jewelry exploded as a growing elite demanded new luxury items. With technical virtuosity, ancient Greek goldsmiths executed sumptuous designs like those in The Met's collection, the original inspiration for Liami's gleaming contemporary pieces.
