The dragon's slender body is dense with granulation: tiny gold granules fused to the surface to highlight the design. The technique was introduced to China in the second half of the first millennium B.C., probably through maritime trade. By the late Western and early Han periods, Chinese goldsmiths had put it to extensive use. Given the ancient buckle's extravagant design, it was likely made in the imperial workshop.
