The Museum’s necklace adapts the granulated gold elements and the beads from a pair of repoussé and chased gold earrings (Greek, Hellenistic, 2nd–1st century B.C.). The original earrings were adorned with beads of emerald, banded glass, gold, and dolphins’ heads. Many types of earrings were made during the Hellenistic period. The dolphin was associated with the goddess Aphrodite and her birth from the sea.
