Art History

Between 500 and 1000, successive waves of conquerors captured and recaptured strategic cities in the Italian peninsula and Sicily. Because of the many peoples active in the Italian peninsula, art of the period shows the influence of many different styles. The Langobards, a Germanic people who migrated south from the Danube valley, invaded Byzantine Italy in 568.
