Among the Museum’s many important examples of miniature portraits is a French version titled Madame Ingouf
. Painted about 1790 and signed “Vincent” at the lower right, it depicts a young woman in profile against a dark blue background. Dressed in a white chemise and wearing a large pendant pearl earring, she may be a relative of the engraver Francois Robert Ingouf (1747–1812) or of his brother, also an engraver, Pierre Charles Ingouf (born 1746, died before 1800). Our enchanting necklace is based on the earrings seen in this splendid portrait miniature.
