Description

Over the centuries, Persian artists have demonstrated tremendous ingenuity and technical skill, and their creations are among the masterpieces of late medieval Islamic art and architecture. The Museums collection includes a pair of exquisite cylinder-shaped hair ornaments (12th13th century), attributed to Gurgan, a city established as a Muslim settlement in northern Iran, east of the Caspian Sea. The ornaments feature two concentric bands of intricate, rectilinear gold openwork over a bronze core. Our ornate necklace is adapted from these elegant ornaments.
