The term is derived from the French word rocaille, referring to the rock-like or broken-shell motifs often found in Rococo designs. C-curves and S-curves—as seen in the bow of this elaborate key—and asymmetry are also characteristic of Rococo objects. In Britain the style was most often applied to furniture, silver, and ceramics, and remained fashionable from about 1730 to 1770.
