The Museum’s collection includes a gold aureus
minted at Rome during the reign of the emperor Antonius Pius (ruled A.D. 138–161). The coin shows on the obverse a draped bust of his wife, the empress Faustina, whose death and deification in A.D. 141 the coin commemorates. Our regal necklace is based on this ancient Roman coin.
