Description

In the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum is a string of 17 precious and semiprecious stones, probably Spanish, which have been dated to the Visigothic period (586711). They may have been part of a seventh-century treasure of 26 votive crowns found near Toledo, Spain. The strand includes amethyst, emerald, spinel, and pearls, all drilled; two sapphires were added later. These original stones are the basis for our striking necklace.

Art History

From 500 to 1000 A.D., the Iberian Peninsula witnessed different waves of conquests by the Visigothic, Byzantine, and Arab armies. Of the many peoples who settled in the western lands that were formerly part of the Roman empire, the Germanic Visigoths were among the most successful; the kingdom they established in Spain flourished from about 507 to 711.
