Description

Description

Cotton fabrics printed with pictorial scenes are commonly called toile de Jouy, named for the well-regarded factory established by Christophe Oberkampf (Swiss, 1738 1815) in 1760 at Jouy- en-Josas near Paris. Printed using engraved copperplates, these pictorial cottons featured fine details but were limited to one color. The designs depicted a range of subjects from floral or chinoiserie styles to political topics to genre scenes to mythological tales, fables, and popular literature. Our colorful notecard box features details of late-eighteenth-century French toile de Jouy designs from the Metropolitan Museums collection.

Includes 20 notecards (5 each of 4 images), 12 gift enclosures (6 each of 2 images), 34 color-lined envelopes, and 35 self- adhesive seals. Box: 6 1/8''W x 4 1/2''H x 4 3/4''D; notecards: 4'' x 5 1/4''; gift enclosures: 2 3/4'' x 3 3/4''.
