Henri Matisse (French, 1869–1954) is regarded as one of the greatest colorists working in the twentieth century. He first attracted attention at the 1905 Paris Salon d'Automne, when visitors were scandalized by his expressive brushtrokes and unexpected color placement in Woman with a Hat
, a painting that was soon acquired by the American collector Leo Stein. During the first decade of the twentieth century, the Stein siblings—Gertrude, Leo, Michael, and his wife Sarah—were Matisse's most enthusiastic patrons, and all six of the paintings reproduced in this notecard box belonged to their collections.
