The Museum's Water Lilies Notecards are based on some of Monet's most notable water lily paintings. Monet was a key figure in the Impressionist movement that transformed French painting in the second half of the nineteenth century. As part of his extensive gardening plans at Giverny, Monet had a pond dug and planted with lilies in 1893. He painted the subject in 1899, and thereafter it dominated his art.

Claude Monet (French, 18401926) first painted his water lily pond at Giverny in 1899 and it dominated his art for the rest of his life. A key figure in the Impressionist movement that transformed French painting in the second half of the nineteenth century, he worked en plein air using rapid brushstrokes and broken color, the signatures of the new style. Working in natural light and shifting seasons, Monet returned to his subjects again and again in order to capture every observation, nuance, and reflection. He never grew tired of painting the evocative water lilies of his beloved Giverny.
