Art History
In 1872 when Peter Carl Fabergé was only twenty-six years old, he took over his father’s jewelry business in St. Petersburg, Russia. With the help of his brother Agathon, Fabergé cultivated the patronage of the last two czars of the Romanov dynasty and the elite of Edwardian society. Fabergé successfully revolutionized the way jewelry was evaluated in Russia. Previously the worth of an object had been assessed strictly by the value of its precious stones and metals. Fabergé instead emphasized the design creativity and workmanship involved.
