Violets grown at The Met Cloisters include sweet violet (Viola odorata) and dog violet (Viola canina) in the Trie Cloister, a fantasy garden inspired by the plants in the seven Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries (South Netherlandish, 1495–1505). All the plants depicted in these famous tapestries were known in the Middle Ages, yet no such actual garden ever existed.
