Two gold lion-head plaques from Achaemenid Persia (6th century–4th century B.C.) in the Museum’s collection closely resemble the horned lion-griffin heads on a glazed- tile frieze excavated at Susa. The roaring lion also appears on drinking vessels, furniture, textiles, and giant column capitals. These ancient adornments are the source for our dramatic pin.
