This striking pin evokes a Pre-Columbian pendant in The Met collection, which was originally made between the 5th and the 10th century A.D. by a member of the Tolima society in Colombia's Magdalena Valley. Tolima goldwork includes large cast and hammered pectorals in stylized human and animal forms; the pendant on which we have based our design is characterized as heart-shaped.
The pendants were worn by ancient Americans around the neck on cords or thongs. Their standard, identifiable forms verge on geometric abstraction, as seen in our elegant adaptation.
