Max Beckmann moved to New York in 1949 and was energized by the city, describing it as "a prewar Berlin multiplied a hundredfold." It was while on his way to The Met in December of 1950 that the artist suffered a fatal heart attack. He was planning to see his painting Self-Portrait in Blue Jacket (1950), on view at the time in the exhibition American Painting Today.

Highlighting the artist's special connection to the city, the exhibition, Max Beckmann in New York, brings together nearly 40 paintings, 14 of which he produced while living in New York from 1949 to 1950, as well as 25 earlier works dating from 1920 to 1948, belonging to New York collections. Celebrating and honoring the artist's distinguished career and ties to The Met, assembled here are ten postcards, which faithfully reproduce Beckmann's vivid palette and expressionist style in paintings from The Met collection as well as those from national and international lenders.
