Description

Description

Our oversize poster reproduces Claude Monet's (French, 1840 1926) beautiful Water Lilies canvas of 1919. Monet was a key figure in the Impressionist movement that transformed French painting in the second half of the nineteenth century. As part of his extensive gardening plans at Giverny, Monet had a pond dug and planted with lilies in 1893. He first painted the subject in 1899, and thereafter it dominated his art.

Monet left much of his late work incomplete and released few paintings for sale, reporting that he was not yet satisfied and was still working on them. This canvas in The Met collection is one of four water lily pictures that, unusually, the artist did finish, sign, and sell in 1919. Today, his water lily paintings are among the most recognized and adored works of art in the world.
