Description

Description

Accompanying The Met exhibition Seurat's Circus Sideshow, our exclusive poster features Circus Sideshow (Parade de Cirque), by Georges Seurat (French, 18591891), an oil on canvas in The Met collection made in 188788. Seurat demonstrated the versatility of his technique by exhibitingthe original painting, a nighttime outdoor scene in artificial light, at the Salon des Indpendants in 1888. This is Seurat's first nocturnal painting and his first depiction of popular entertainment. It represents the parade, or sideshow, of the Circus Corvi, which had set up near the Place de la Nation in Paris in the spring of 1887.
