Description

Plum Garden at Kamata. Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 17971858). Polychrome woodblock print, 1857

Our exclusive framed reproduction features number 27 from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo by Utagawa Hiroshige, one of Japan's great landscape artists, whose views of his native country are celebrated throughout the world. He gained special fame for his pictures of scenic spots on the Tokaido road from Kyoto to Edo, such as this sensitive garden print. Drawing on a wide range of influences, Hiroshige used various painting techniques to produce innovative woodblock print images and to add a sense of atmosphere and lyricism to his compositions.

The Met is pleased to offer digital print reproductions of some of its most prized works of art, including many that are rarely on view because of their sensitivity to light. Each work of art is digitally photographed and expertly color-corrected against the original work of art. Images are printed in- house by the staff of the Museum's Photograph Studio on high-resolution, professional ink jet printers, using archival, fine-art papers. These studio prints are of the highest quality, and our digital reproductions are carefully vetted by our curators to ensure near-perfect fidelity to the original works of art.
