Description

The decorative pattern on our reading-glass frames is taken from a terracotta situla, a bucket-shaped vase for wine, attributed to the Lycurgus Painter (Greek, South Italian, Apulian, ca. 360-340 B.C.). This painted vessel in the Museums collection features spirited scenes of the wine-god Dionysos, while on either side is an elaborate palmette, an ornamental motif based on the fan-shaped leaves of the palm tree.

Available in strengths +1.5, +2.0, +2.5, +3.0. Optical quality frames (an optician can replace these lenses with most prescription lenses). Handmade acetate. Bridge width: 18mm; frame width: 140mm; temple length: 150mm.

Art History

The Museum's collection of Greek and Roman art consists of more than seventeen thousand works spanning in date from the Neolithic period (ca. 4500 B.C.) to the time of the Roman emperor Constantine's conversion to Christianity in A.D. 312. It contains the art of many cultures and is considered one of the most complete in North America.
