Description

Artful colorations and patterns characterize the designs of William Morris (British, 1834–1896), one of the founders of the Arts and Crafts movement and a forerunner of modern design. The motif on our reading glasses is adapted from Pink and Rose, an original Morris & Co. wallpaper (ca. 1890) in the Museum’s collection.

Available in strengths +1.5, +2.0, +2.5, +3.0. Optical quality frames (an optician can replace these lenses with most prescription lenses). Handmade acetate. Bridge width: 18mm; frame width: 140mm; temple length: 150mm.

Art History

Poet, political activist, architect, and designer, William Morris (British, 1834–1896) ranks among the most influential figures of the Victorian era. In 1861, Morris co- founded the successful firm later known as Morris & Co. The company’s enduringly popular designs for wallpaper, stained glass, furniture, and fabric reflect Morris’s own interests in medieval art and the close study of nature, and were often densely patterned with flowers, leaves, and fruit.
