This imposing piece is based on an Early Renaissance ring in The Met collection, which was made in Rome, Italy, about 1464–71. Crafted in gilt brass and blue glass, the original is engraved with royal French lilies and the name of Pope Paul II, who was pope during this time.
Though there are as many as 100 rings with the names of Early Renaissance popes in European museums, this was the first example to come to The Met. Such impressive rings were not worn by the popes themselves but served as symbols of papal authority and may have had a ceremonial function.
