Islamic glass beads were traded in Africa as early as the ninth century, and European glass beads were introduced in the fifteenth century. Our striking scarf design was developed from a richly beaded garment in the Museum’s collection made in the early twentieth century by the Mbukushu or Yei peoples of Angola, Namibia, or Botswana.
