Art HistoryBed quilts and coverlets—appliquéd, pieced, or embroidered—are some of the handmade objects that American women created to express their artistry and skill. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, women of all social strata made quilts and coverlets, which were often designed to please the eye as well as for utility.
