DescriptionThe dazzling design on our scarf is taken from a detail in a beautiful lacquered wood panel (1928–30) in the Museum’s collection. In this work, the engraved pattern of abstract foliage reveals the varied colors of the layers of lacquer below the surface.

Art HistoryJean Dunand (French, 1877–1942) was one of the most versatile and prolific figures of French Art Deco and perhaps the most renowned European lacquer artist of the twentieth century. Trained as a sculptor, in 1912 he undertook to learn the closely guarded secrets of traditional Asian lacquering from a Japanese master living in Paris.
