A one-time assistant in the studio of Auguste Rodin, François Pompon (French, 1855 –1933) did not achieve recognition as a sculptor until he was 67 years old. In 1922, his plaster sculpture of a polar bear—nearly ten feet in length—won critical and popular praise at the Paris Salon d’Automne. Smoothly modeled and shorn of extraneous detail, the work was later reproduced in a variety of sizes and media, including plaster, porcelain, and marble. The version in the Metropolitan Museum was executed in white marble soon after the original plaster. Our reproduction is cast from a direct mold of the original Pompon polar bear sculpture.

So happy to see this is still available. I bought this years ago and have it in all four sizes; the large, small, mini and a Christmas ornament. I love all of them. It is such a beautiful, simple yet powerful image of a wonderful animal. I absolutely love them all.
I received this polar bear sculpture as a gift just prior to us taking a trip to Churchill to visit with the polar bears. It is absolutely beautiful and a wonderful souvenir of what’s to come Of our natural habitat adventure shortly. I love it!
For years, my wife has asked me: don't you want to see a polar bear on the tundra---as if every right-thinking person does. I don't have that desire, so I thought I would bring a polar bear to her. She's named him Archibald and he sits on the table next to her chair.
I purchased my first large bear in 1989. I purchased another last week. Yes, the original bear is a creamy white and the new bear is a gray white but they are both beautiful. There are very slight differences otherwise. I display them together. Love them.
Just received my bear in the mail today. I love him. I have wanted one of these since I saw the original in the Musee d'Orsay and then one in a park in Dijon. I purchased the small one but I think I will be buying the bigger one. It was well packaged by the MET and arrived in no time at all.
Lovely piece. Saw in Musee d'Orsay in Paris and fell in love with and was so pleased that I was able to purchase here as opposed to bringing home in luggage. Only wish that there was a 'medium' size.
I bought this as a replacement for one that broke. This one was quite different from the original - color, size of head, lines of the bear. Feel the original was much better quality. Returned it and keep my broken original.
