The Museum's collection houses a ceramic figure of a female dancer from the Western Han period, which is made of earthenware accented with pigment. A quintessential example of early Chinese sculpture, this beautiful figure illustrates the artist's achievement in conveying a sense of motion in a still object. The sculptor imbued the dancer with life force by capturing a tension-filled instant in her movement when she throws one sleeve back, gently stoops, and flexes her knees. Based on this evocative work, our expressive reproduction was created with a combination of three-dimensional imaging and traditional sculpture techniques.

While visiting friends in New York, the Museum is always on our list of things to do. I had seen the Dancer on the email listserve that we receive from the Met and had admired her. I purchased it that day after really enjoying the Han exhibit. It goes well with many things in our home, and I'm very pleased with. While it may not be for everyone, it certainly has been a pleasure for us.
I had looked at this item for more than a year, and finally decided to purchase it when it went on sale._x000D_
When I opened the box, I was disappointed as the photo is not fully accurate as it does not show the black back side of the head or the darkness of the grey--in the photo it appears much lighter._x000D_
The shape is wonderful and graceful, and I do love that, but I don't love the darker coloration on the head, arms and skirt._x000D_
As yet, I am undecided about keeping it.
I do love this figure as I have decorated my home with a dominate Asian decor.
My only complaint is that there is no accompanying information to describe the product. I have always received a little information slip. For example, why is her face darker? Is it a replication of the original with missing pigment? For the amount of money it would be nice to gain an additional perspective for this piece.
We bought this online and once we got it, we promptly returned it. In person, it looks cheap. I'd give it no stars if I could. I think its funny that I was prompted via email from the Met Store to review it after I returned it.
This sculpture is absolutely beautiful with remarkable likeness to the original in the hall toward the Chinese garden. I visited her every time I went to the Met never imagining I would have her likeness in my home - where she is now very happy. The packaging of the sculpture was excellent preventing damage. I love looking at her. Although not inexpensive the cost is worth it if you love "the lady" (what I call her) as I do.
