Art HistoryThe Museum houses a beautiful wool shawl, produced in France in the first quarter of the nineteenth century. The flowers displayed on the original shawl have a painterly quality that is particular to nineteenth-century French weaving. The configuration of the design, however, is reminiscent of Russian embroidery. These characteristics make it likely that this shawl was woven in France for the Russian market.
