The palmette, an ornamental motif based on the fan-shaped fronds of the palm tree, is one of the most versatile and prevalent motifs in classical art of all media and periods. Our elegant shawl design is adapted from the elaborate palmette compositions on several ancient Greek terracotta vases dated between about 510 B.C. and 330 B.C. in the Museum’s collection; they include a pelike (water/wine jar), a hydria (water jar), an alabastron (perfume vase), and a situla (wine bucket).
