A knotted-pile fragment (early 16th century) in the Museums collection, originally from northwestern Iran, likely once formed part of a large Persian medallion carpet. This richly patterned textile is the source for our graceful ruana.

Art History

In the early sixteenth century, Iran was united under the rule of the Safavid dynasty (15011722), the greatest dynasty to emerge from Iran in the Islamic period. The Safavids were prominent supporters of the arts of the book. Drawing inspiration from designs generated in the royal painting workshop, luxurious textiles and carpets were manufactured as court furnishings.
