In 1861, William Morris (British, 1834–1896) co-founded a London interior design firm (reorganized in 1875 as Morris & Co.) to produce an array of handcrafted household furnishings. He later established a textile workshop at Merton Abbey in Surrey, where his chief designer, John Henry Dearle (British, 1860–1932), produced richly patterned tapestries and fabrics. Our opulent shawl is based on Rose and Lily
, an elegant textile in the Museum’s collection that was designed by Dearle about 1905.
