Description

In 1861, William Morris (British, 18341896) co-founded a London interior design firm (reorganized in 1875 as Morris & Co.) to produce a full range of handcrafted household furnishings. He later established a textile workshop at Merton Abbey in Surrey, where his chief designer, John Henry Dearle (British 18601932), assisted in the creation of richly patterned tapestries and fabrics. Our graceful mugs are developed from Cherwell, an elegant Morris & Co. cotton textile in the Museums collection, which was designed by Dearle at Merton Abbey in 1887 and printed before 1917.
