Byzantine Leaf Pattern Tie
Description
In the Museum’s collection are five panels meticulously worked in cloisonné enamel on gold (ca. 1100), which were once part of a cover for an icon of the Virgin Hagiosoritissa. In this icon type the Virgin is shown in near profile with her hands outstretched in prayer, often toward a small bust of Christ in a hemisphere representing heaven. The design of our richly patterned tie is taken from an ornate foliate motif on one of these panels.
Available in green, red, and yellow. Silk. Imported. 3 5/8''W.
