Description

Beginning in 1898, Louis Comfort Tiffany (American, 18481933) adapted his innovative Favrile glass window-making techniques to the production of artful lampshades. Although Tiffany Studios (1902-32) is famous for its floral motif shades, it also created arresting geometric designs, such as the Lotus Pagoda lamp (1900 15) in the Museums collection. The angular pattern on this lampshade was adapted from Japanese sources, which were of great interest to Louis Comfort Tiffany. It is the source for our handsome tie design.

Available in copper/blue and green/blue. Silk. Made in Italy. 3 3/4''W.

Art History

Of all Louis Comfort Tiffanys (American, 18481933) artistic endeavors, leaded glass brought him the greatest recognition. Having begun his career as a painter, he approached his work in glass with a painters eye for the nuances of color and shadow. This led him to achieve a more varied palette with richer hues and greater vibrancy, subtlety, and texture, enabling him to paint with glass in the most minute detail. Favrile glass was the perfect medium through which Louis Comfort Tiffany could express his unique blending of nature and exoticism.
