Louis Comfort Tiffany (American, 1848–1933) was renowned for his exquisite creations in glass. The pattern of this tie is based on the decoration of a glass mosaic- inlaid column that he designed about 1905 and that is in the Museum’s collection. The column, with glass mosaic inspired by Byzantine examples, was one of six made to decorate the Tiffany Studios showroom; they were later installed in Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Laurelton Hall home on Long Island, which is now, sadly, destroyed.
