The distinguished ceramic traditions of the Middle East came to the Iberian Peninsula in the eighth century with the spread of Islam. Spanish lusterware’s brilliant coloring and expert craftsmanship—with decorative motifs drawn from both Moorish and Western imagery—became renowned throughout Europe. Our handsome tie pattern with coats of arms and interlaced bands is based on a fourteenth-century Spanish lusterware dish in the Museum’s collection.
