Sonia Delaunay (French, born Russia, 1885–1979) had a passion for color. In her signature version of Cubism, she juxtaposed vivid blocks of color to explore their tonal relationships. She named her distinctive style simultanéisme
, a term she adopted from the treatise De la loi du contraste simultané des couleurs
(The Law of the Simultaneous Contrast of Colors). For our bold tie design we’ve adapted a detail from a color plate in Sonia Delaunay: ses peintures, ses objets, ses tissus simultanés, ses modes
(1925), a rare portfolio devoted to her work in the Metropolitan Museum’s collection.
