Lacquer surface decoration, especially with gold, was refined to the highest level in Japan. In the Museum’s collection is an elegant black-and-gold-covered lacquer box (ca. 1800) decorated with stylized bamboo and birds. The distinctive pattern on our top is based on this box.Available in small, medium, large, or x-large. Cotton blend. Classic fit. Cap sleeves. Imported. Machine washable.

Among lacquer techniques developed to the highest degree in Japan is the use of gold and silver in powdered form, either mixed in to form gold or silver lacquer or sprinkled over lacquered surface to create a graduated gold or silver effect. The resultant works often display great subtlety and delicacy, and maki-e (gold or silver) lacquer is one of the supreme achievements of Japanese decorative art.Description
