In 1903, the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops) was founded as a designers’ cooperative based on the principles of the Arts and Crafts movement, which strove to provide a wide range of well-designed, often handmade products for a sophisticated audience. The workshops began producing printed and woven textiles in 1905, and for nearly 30 years they created sophisticated and elegant designs, distinctive in their use of bold colors and graphic motifs such as stylized flowers and abstract geometric shapes. Our eye-catching tunic pattern is based on a printed silk textile (1910–28) in the Museum’s collection.
