Description

Among the more than 35,000 costumes and accessories housed in The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art are hundreds of noteworthy bags and purses. Our lavish clutch is based on one such purse in this collection, which was probably made in France between 172540. The original purse, beautifully handcrafted in silk, metal, and leather, is richly adorned with ornate floral motifs and scrolling foliage. Such refinement is typical of objects created during the reign of Louis XV (r. 1715 1774), considered a golden age of French decorative arts.
