Description

The graphic pattern on our tote is adapted from the interlacing motif on a muqarnas element tile with delicate carved decoration in the Museums collection. In and around the city of Samarqand during the second half of the fourteenth century, such tiles were used to fill squinches, or supports to provide a satisfactory transition between a square room and its domed ceiling.

Art History

The Museums collection of Islamic art, which ranges in date from the seventh to the nineteenth century, reflects the great diversity and range of Islamic culture. Nearly 12,000 objects have been assembled in the Museum from as far westward as Spain and Morocco and as far eastward as Central Asia, India, and Southeast Asia.
