Art HistoryDuring the age of the great Ottoman sultan Süleyman the Magnificent (1494–1566), Iznik, a small town in northwestern Turkey, emerged as one of the most important centers for ceramic production in the Middle East. In the Museum’s collection is a splendid tile (ca. 1574–78) made in Iznik. Decorated with blue, green, and thickly applied red underglaze on a bright white ground, the design features Chinese- style cloud bands intertwined with saz leaves and abstract floral elements.
