Description

Among the treasures of the Metropolitan Museums Egyptian collection is a finely worked pectoral (Middle Kingdom, Dynasty 12, ca. 18871813 B.C.) of gold inlaid with carnelian, feldspar, turquoise, and garnet. The pectorals owner was Princess Sithathoryunet, who lived during the reigns of Senwosret II and Amenemhat III. The appearance of Senwosret IIs name on the pectoral indicates that it was a royal gift from the king to the princess Sithathoryunet. Our striking watch was adapted from elements in this splendid pectorala superb example of the technical skill and artistry of Middle Kingdom jewelers.
